July, 2004 Message from the President... Summer is flying by quickly! I noticed a movie poster for a new movie about a diver that was left stranded alone in the ocean. The Discovery Channel is advertising a Shark Week show with the same theme including actual footage of the shark infested waters. Not sure I want to see either the movie or the Discovery Channel show. USA Today recently ran a story about a diver off the coast of California that was left at one location while the boat took off and went to a second dive location about 1.5 hours away. Seems like they might have even made the second dive before they realized that they had a missing diver. They alerted the authorities, but they weren’t sure where they lost the diver. In the meantime, the stranded diver surfaced and stayed on the surface. He got lucky when a boat load of boy scouts doing some survival/rescue training were in the area and spotted him and were able to rescue him. I think they earned their badges that day! Murphy’s Laws apply to diving….. I found that out recently when I replaced the original camera that came with my underwater housing. Underwater I found out that there was also a problem with the housing and I couldn’t trigger the camera to take pictures. Then I bit through one side of my regulator mouthpiece and of course, I didn’t have a spare. These were just minor annoyances and at least I didn’t get left behind when the boat left! This weekend is the DAN BBQ at Portage Quarry near Bowling Green, OH. I went last year and it was a busy weekend at the quarry. A group from Michigan put on a great fireworks show over the far end of the quarry. The TA Club from Columbus sponsored a Treasure Hunt and gave out door prizes at the BBQ. No program is planned for Tuesday’s meeting, so if anyone has any ideas or wants to do something, just let me know. Barb
